Autumn in The Sunflower State is a magical experience. Late October and early November are typically the best time to take advantage of fall foliage in this stunning state, though temperatures tend to drop into the chilly realms. Nevertheless, it's the perfect time to take a hike! If you're looking for fall foliage that'll knock your socks off, Cross Timbers State Park is an excellent place for adventure. However, there's one particular trail — Chautauqua Hills Loop — that takes fall foliage to the next level. Lace up your hiking boots and pack some trail snacks, because this adventure is one you'll want to experience in person.
Cross Timbers State Park actually gets its name from early pioneers who passed through the area. They referred to it as "Cross Timbers," and the name was documented frequently enough that it felt like a natural choice for the park's name when it was founded in 1960. With a stunning 1,075 acres, the park includes grasslands, wetlands, a reservoir, Walnut Creek, and the Verdigris River. The grasslands, spotted with hardwood trees, is one of my favorite places to take in the beauty of Kansas fall foliage.
The breathtaking Chautauqua Hills, a 10-mile-wide stretch of hilly landscape, is perhaps the best place to view fall foliage in Kansas. In addition to boasting a sea of golden grass and fiery foliage, the stunning plains and forests of this region are home to critters like deer, quails, turkeys, and fuzzy little mammals like furbearers.
The vastness of this region is absolutely humbling. At any point on the seven-mile Chautauqua Hills Loop near Toronto, you'll feel like you're staring off toward the very edge of the world. These rolling hills, nestled under a vast blue sky and framed by forests of foliage, are stunning to experience in person. You definitely don't need to hike the entirety of the trail, but if you have the time and leg strength, it's worth it.
In addition to beautiful stretches of grassland, the trail will also take you into the forested stretches of the Chautauqua Hills. Here, wetland communities add some variety to the landscape and attract a variety of waterfowl species. If you want to spend more than a day taking in the glory of this Kansas landscape, you can claim a campsite. The adjacent 4,600-acre Toronto Wildlife Area expands your hiking possibilities, so it'll easily become a nature-filled trip you won't soon forget.
The Chautauqua Hills are often cited as having the best fall foliage in Kansas, but many locals are content to settle for windshield views along a lazy Sunday drive. However, you truly can't beat experiencing this unlimited splendor on foot. Gorgeous foliage, stunning scenes of deer wandering through hills of oak savanna and terraces of grassland, and quiet visages of waterfowl floating on still waters will haunt your mind for seasons to come.
