As the days are filled with sunshine and greenery, there's nothing better for a body than spending some time outdoors. Kansas is full of nature preserves and state parks, and with those comes more than our fair share of hiking trails. For those of you like me, who can't walk for too long without injuring something (or falling on our faces) here are some shorter hikes that still happen to be some of the best hikes in Kansas.
1. Sculpture Garden (Overland Park)
Overland Park's Botanical Gardens have a wonderful trail filled with statues ranging from pop art to classic bronze. It's an easy breezy trail .4 miles when you've got so many reasons to stop!
2. Osage Nature Trail - Newton
This 1.8-mile loop travels through a forested area that's perfect for seeing wildlife right up close, especially our Kansas birds. This is one of the most scenic hikes in Kansas.
3. Waterfall Pond Trail at Milford State Park - Junction City
Pretty scenery is on both sides of this .6-mile loop with a man-made waterfall at the head of the trail, which looks really pretty when it's on!
4. Bittersweet Trail at Ernie Miller Nature Park - Olathe
Ernie Miller Nature Park is full of beautiful surprises, but this trail is by far my favorite. It has beautiful wildflowers along its .4-mile length making it one of the best kid-friendly hikes in Kansas.
5. Mt. Lehigh Trail - Bassett
This 1.1-mile trail is also a great place for flowers, as well as these stacked rock structures that make the forest feel a little more lived-in and loved.
6. Stoptler Cove Nature Trail - Kansas City
Though it isn't fall yet, this little 1.2-mile trail looks great in any season.
7. Mt. Marty Trails - Kansas City
Almost 2 miles long, this trail near KC has plenty of different hiking surfaces and foliage that covers sections of path, making it easier for us who don't like too much sun.
8. Cedar Ridge ADA Trail at Tuttle Creek - Manhattan
This shorter .6-mile trail features a bridge that always makes for pleasant traffic, as well as plenty of scenic views.
9. Neosho Riverwalk (Council Grove)
1.1 miles of riverside views make this a short and sweet excuse to go out and photograph a Kansas sunset.
