The DNR (Department of Natural Resources) calls Iowa, "a treasure chest of natural resources." It's true. No matter where in the state you happen to be, there's probably a state park close by that represents our state perfectly. This particular Iowa state park covers a huge amount of land, is located just west and north of the state's center, has a large lake perfect for fishing, over 45 miles of trails, and a lovely sandy beach.
Brushy Creek State Recreation Area is located at 2802 Brushy Creek Road, Lehigh.
It's in Webster County and it covers over 6,000 acres of land.
There are 45 miles of multi-use trails, here. You can snowmobile, explore the trails on horseback, hike, or even cross-country ski.
Fort Dodge is just 15 miles away, but many people who visit Bushy Creek State Recreation area choose to camp here.
There are 39 electric sites and 8 sites with full water and sewer hookups.
Fishing is a popular past-time here.
Panfish and smallmouth bass are favorites and a fishing pier is available on the west side of the lake. There's a fishing tournament here nearly every weekend.
There's no shortage of hiking trails here.
A number of creeks feed into the river, which makes hiking more of a challenge. These trails are rated as moderate by experienced hikers.
Brushy Creek Loop Trail is a favorite at this popular recreational area.
The 13-mile loop is mostly gravel and goes around the lake, offering amazing views.
West River Trail is a 7.1-mile hike.
It offers great views of the Des Moines River.
The trails here are great for all skill levels.
The terrain is beautiful, and this park offers a great (and huge) representation of Iowa's beautiful natural resources.
Swim, mountain bike, hike, or just relax and enjoy the views.
Hunters enjoy spending time here, too. Rabbits, squirrels, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, quail, and pheasants all call this gorgeous Iowa park home.
