For many of us, periodically unplugging from the busy world of social obligations and social media is necessary.
This Iowa town has the perfect solution when you need a few hours of peace and quiet, some light exercise, and a reason to leave it all behind for an afternoon.
Winding through a series of beautiful hills and valleys, The Pony Hollow Trail at the south edge of the Elkader City Park, is open year round.
The trail is maintained and owned by the Clayton County Conservation Board. Visitors use it for biking, hiking, snowmobiling, and horseback riding.
The trail follows the old St. Paul, Milwaukee, and Chicago railroad tracks. It's a short hike; just 4.4 miles from end to end. Those that prefer to go out and back should plan for an eight mile trek.
Those four miles go by fast, though. There's so much beauty and the trail is easy to navigate.
Along the way, you'll see interpretive signs that explain the wetlands, topography of the area, and the trees.
The Clayton County Conservation Board put down lime chips on the trail in 2005 to make the area nicer for visitors. This trail is a great hike for all skill levels. It's shaded, scenic, and flat.
The Turkey River is close to the trail, and offers a haven for many species of Iowa wildlife.
The Elkader City Park is close to the trail, where restrooms and water fountains are available.
Be sure to visit Elkader and take this long and relaxing hike before the weather changes.
As the leaves begin to turn orange, red, and yellow, this epic nature walk becomes even more beautiful.
