Des Moines is a huge city, dwarfing all others in the Hawkeye State by a wide margin. There's much to do and see here, so finding a place to relax and cool off can be essential to a good day of touring - especially if you're visiting in summer! That's why I was so happy to discover that the city of Des Moines has invested in a new urban oasis. Hidden on Walnut Street, EMC Downtown Park is the newest park in Iowa, and it's a small but engaging place featuring benches, green spaces, pickleball courts, and even some unique public art. It's the kind of laid-back neighborhood park that everyone has been clamoring for more of, and now it's hiding right in the heart of Des Moines. Word may not have gotten out yet, so come and see it for yourself before the crowds find it!
You might have noticed the sign pointing to a new urban haven in Des Moines - but have you explored it?
EMC Downtown Park was designed as a hideaway in the middle of one of Des Moines' busiest areas, with a mix of seating space and green features.
Small but roomy, it's filled with active recreation opportunities - and it opened to the public in June 2023.
The first thing you'll notice is the vibrant green and blue colors, designed to give a vibe of nature amid the large seating area.
Around the park, you'll find basketball, ping-pong, and even pickleball facilities for play.
The quirky public art sculptures aren't just designed to look pretty, either - they're safe climbing structures for kids over soft play surfaces.

Not to mention, the park is only feet away from the famous Surety Hotel.
