Yes, Iowa’s landlocked, but that doesn’t mean we have to miss out on going to the beach! If you grew up in Iowa or surrounding states, then chances are you’re already familiar with or have visited popular tourist destinations like Okoboji and Spirit Lake.
But what if you’re looking for something new, or closer to home, or just a little more off the beaten path? Well, it turns out that Iowa offers some great lesser known beaches that will more than fulfill your desire for some sun and watery summer fun.
1. Five Island Lake, Emmetsburg
This beautiful park is the ideal place to relax and hang out near the water. In addition to a great beach for swimming, there’s recreational equipment, fishing, boating and camping.
2. Lake Macbride State Park, Solon
This scenic and family friendly park is a great place for water recreation of all kinds. You can lounge on the beach or get out on the water with pontoons, canoes, paddle boats or kayaks. Wrap up your day in the sun in nearby Solon with a locally brewed beer at the Big Grove Brewery or a wood fired pizza at Red Vespa.
3. Rathbun Lake, Centerville
Rathbun Lake is the second largest lake in Iowa and is surrounded by natural beauty. Home to a variety of wildlife, you can soak in the scenic views as you enjoy the beach.
4. Lake Red Rock, Marion County
Iowa’s largest lake boasts camping, fishing, bike trails and, of course, beaches. And, if you want to extend your beach to a weekend getaway, you can check out local wineries, visit the tulip festival in nearby Pella, and much more.
5. West Lake Beach, Davenport
West Lake Park offers four lakes for swimming and fishing. Here, it’s easy to relax and take in the serene atmosphere, swim and share a picnic with your friends and family.
6. Lake Icaria, Corning
With no jet boats or jet skies allowed, this is a great place to go for some serious peace and relaxation. And, of course, there are trails, fishing, picnic areas, concessions and more.
7. Kent Park, Oxford
Just a few miles outside Coralville, Kent park is impeccably landscaped and was planned with beauty, convenience and recreation in mind. Whether you want to swim at the beach, take a walk on the waterfront trail or take advantage of numerous fishing spots, Kent Park has everything you need. Plus, when you’re done, you can pay a visit to Jon’s Ice-Cream Store and Restaurant for burgers and fries and a plethora of ice-cream treats.
8. George Wyth State Park, Waterloo
George Wyth State Park is a great place to get away and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities. Considered an urban wildlife sanctuary, this is a place of natural beauty. The beach is a go-to swimming spot in the area and is also a popular windsurfing destination.
