Iowa's state park system is among the best in the country! The state's recreation system was highly influenced by Civilian Conservation Corps projects thanks to the New Deal, and thanks to that, we've got some of the coolest parks you'll ever get to see. During the same time, another unique program outside of the CCC's scope built a gorgeous park along the Wapsipinicon River, and now you can hike through Wapsipinicon State Park thanks to the efforts of inmates at the Anamosa State Penitentiary, who built the facilities, bridges, and roads.
Wapsipinicon State Park can be found in Anamosa, Iowa, and it's a tiny hidden gem that nature lovers will truly enjoy.
The 394-acre park follows the Wapsipinicon River, and on warm days, you can wade in to cool off!
The park is full of fascinating features, like an old converted rail bridge that now serves as a footbridge and a reminder of the past.
There are also small caves in the rock faces that you can explore. Even though the park's trail network only offers a few miles, there's so much to see!
Visit in the spring and summer for beautiful wildflowers, or in the fall to see the stunning colors of the leaves turning.
Take time to hike through Wapsipinicon State Park in any season, and you'll find a gorgeous natural wonder hiding in plain sight here in the Hawkeye State.
