Trying to get kids out of the house and into the great outdoors can be a challenge - especially when smartphones are calling. But both kids and kids at heart will love Big Creek State Park in Polk City, just outside of Des Moines. This natural haven isn't just a park - it's a full-fledged destination with multiple attractions, and the more adventurous will find they can discover the greater Des Moines area in a whole new way.
Big Creek State Park in Polk City is right outside of Des Moines - but you'd be forgiven for mistaking it for a coastal getaway.
The beach is ideal for kids looking to splash in the surf and sand - but woods and trails are only feet away.
The piers overlooking the water are perfect for sightseeing, but you'll usually find the regular fishers there bright and early.
One of the biggest draws for kids is the Big Creek playground - the largest wooden playground in Iowa. Don't be surprised if your little ones want to spend hours here!
For the adults, this park is full of beautiful hiking and biking trails - gorgeous any season of the year.
However, if you're up for a bigger adventure, look for the signs pointing to the Neal Smith Trail.
This twenty-five-mile trail starts in Polk City and will take you all the way to the heart of Des Moines - with some unique garden spots along the way.
Your reward at the end of the road is an amazing view of the Des Moines skyline along the Des Moines River.
If the kids enjoyed the bike ride, the Robert D. Ray Asian Gardens are a perfect place to relax and take in the sights.
