Life in the big city can be... a lot, even for someone like me who loves the diversity of shopping, dining, and attractions in a city like Des Moines. It can be overwhelming at times, which is why it's always great to discover little retreats hiding where you might least expect them. Urban parks and urban trails often get overlooked by nature lovers, but they can have some surprising gems - combining natural beauty with the landmarks that humans have built here. A perfect example of this is the Bill Riley Trail, a 5.9-mile out-and-back trail found in the Des Moines Water Works Park. Packing a surprising diversity of environments into this easy trail, it might just be the best hike near Des Moines, and it's a perfect spot to go jogging or cycling and discover why this hidden gem is one of Iowa's best hikes.
Part of a network of urban trails, the Bill Riley Trail is a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city.
This 5.9-mile out-and-back trail is considered an easy route, with the whole trail, which passes waterways and woods, well-maintained.
But as you head on in, it can feel like you're miles away from civilization. Dogs are welcome on this trail, but must be on a leash.
Some of the trail is quiet and peaceful, while other areas take you past beautiful fountains...
And even unique tunnels. The diversity of environments along this trail is truly impressive.
The trail is most popular during warm months, but we think that it's uniquely peaceful and beautiful during the winter, as well.
