The Miami State Recreation Area, located in Peru, is one of the most gorgeous outdoor spaces to visit in the Hoosier state. While other parks and recreational areas receive tons of hype, this often-overlooked outdoor retreat is full of natural beauty.
Outdoor enthusiasts will love all of the activities within this stunning park: you can enjoy fishing, boating, swimming, water skiing, hunting, and camping. There are also 6 incredible hiking trails located within the park, including one that leads to the gorgeous Mississinewa Lake.
The Blue Heron Trail (Trail 5) is a charming loop that spans 2.5 miles and provides a moderate hike. It's a self guided tour and offers many stunning glimpses of this park's beautiful lake.
This gorgeous lakeside trail offers incredible opportunities for photography and is the one hike you'll want to take in the park. You'll likely spot a few blue herons and maybe even an eagle or two.
You can take this trail on its own, or follow the Mosawa Trail (1.5 miles) through the woods until you reach one of the park's main roads. Take this road toward the lake, where you'll then connect with the Blue Heron Trail.
After your hike, you can enjoy this turquoise lake up close. You can visit one of the large reservoirs for swimming and boating activities or stay off the beaten path to keep the peaceful waters to yourself.
