The first snowfall of the season officially came and left, which can only mean one thing: winter is upon us. Whether you're new to the Hoosier state or a seasoned veteran, here are 11 things no one ever talks about when dealing with an Indiana winter.
1. Winter knows no bounds.
Winter doesn't care that it's still technically fall. If it wants to creep in early, out of the blue, it will.
2. It also has a tremendous sense of humor.
Temps warming up? Enter winter. Think it's almost springtime? Here comes winter. Planning a road trip? Yup, winter's laughing at you.
3. It gets darker, earlier.
Changing the clocks is supposed to help with this a bit, but in the Hoosier state, you're likely driving both to and from work in the dark. Thanks, winter.
4. You'll find people outdoors in shorts and tee shirts.
Are they in denial about the cold weather and trying to show winter they're in control? No one really knows, but you'll definitely see shorts even on a frigid, cold day.
5. If you park on the street, your car will get plowed in.
Be sure to invest in a really good snow shovel.
6. Parking in a garage isn't much better.
Sure, there's no car to unbury, but you have to shovel out a driveway for your vehicle.
7. No one knows how to drive in the snow.
Some will slow down, in case it gets slick, and others will speed up to try to beat the storm. It's chaos.
8. The whole world looks a little more magical after a snow storm.
Sure, it's slick and slippery, but look how pretty it is!
9. You'll still have to go to work and the kids will have to go to school.
Snow days have a very different meaning here.
10. You'll probably get covered in snow, again, if the driver in front of you doesn't clean off their car.
It's the worst.
11. You'll find a ton of fun outdoors.
From awesome tubing slides to ice skating to horseback riding, you'll be surprised at the amount of fun you can have outdoors in the winter.
