What if we told you that tucked away nearby Perry Township, there's a pristine reservoir full of clear, blue water, waiting for you to dive in? It's true! Prairie Creek Reservoir is a total hidden gem with beautiful waters that are simply perfect on a hot summer's day. Prairie Creek Reservoir is one of the best swimming spots in Indiana, in fact, and it really doesn't get enough credit!
Prairie Creek Reservoir is an idyllic place, especially on bright, sunny days, when the weather is mild and the water seems extra-glimmery. It's a favorite place among locals who know it's there - but it almost always gets overlooked by visitors in favor of Indiana's larger state and national parks. It's a shame; they don't know what they're missing!
Few things are as refreshing on a hot and humid day than jumping feet-first into cool, crisp water.
But there's plenty more to do other than swim, of course; swimming isn't everyone's thing and that's fine. There's a marina for boating, too, and camping in the area is a lot of fun (and tends to be less crowded than, say, the state parks). The park in its entirety is about three miles of water surface and 750+ acres of beautiful landscape. It's 100% perfection no matter which way you slice it.
Sunsets (and sunrises) here are perfect; it's an understandably popular place for landscape photographers, who come with the intention of shooting the often-dramatic dusks and dawns.
There's never a dull or boring moment on the water; there's only fun, rest, and peaceful quiet if you're there early enough.
Boaters have cause to rejoice: with 740 dock slips, 58 mooring slips, and 16 flotation slips, you can't go wrong.
Of course, there are fees and licenses required; make sure you're covered here.
Also in the park are rentable shelters, which are quite affordable - they begin at just $54.00 per day (plus tax).
Visit the park office to make reservations, and keep in mind that they do tend to fill up quickly - so plan ahead!
Whether you choose to stay for the day, the night, a weekend, or longer, it won't be long before you feel as if Prairie Creek Reservoir and park are a second home.
So, what do you think? Have you ever explored Prairie Creek Reservoir? Do you plan to?
