Tucked away in rural Indiana is a park that doesn't seem to get enough recognition (at least we think so). Sure, the locals know all about it - it's a favorite spot amongst them - but it's just not one of those places you hear a lot about otherwise. It's the ultra-gorgeous Scales Lake Park, and contained within is a sparkling and beautiful lake of the same name. There are several hiking trails that loop around this amazing lake in Indiana, though we're going to focus on the lengthiest (and most rewarding) one.
Booneville, Indiana is hiding a delightful secret.
This small town in southwestern Indiana is home to Scales Lake Park, a county-maintained little piece of heaven itself.
Let's take a gander at the legendary Scales Mountain Bike Trail, which is great for so much more than just biking.
There isn't enough time in the world to describe the beauty of this little place, but we strongly encourage you to discover it on your own via a nice, rigorous hike.
The Scales Mountain Bike Trail (as well as the other trails present in this park) is a six-mile loop that meanders around the main event: gorgeous Scales Lake.
You'll also explore some of Indiana's most beautiful wilderness, forests, and more. It's a very peaceful place, and we think it's perfect for calming the soul. The lake is crystalline and amazing, and seemingly always the perfect temperature for a swim (well, while the weather's warm, anyway).
Though some parts of the trail are paved or boardwalk-style, there is also plenty of dirt and mud, so make sure to plan accordingly.
Your best bet is to hike this awesome loop trail not after a rainstorm (or during snowmelt) but when it's nice, dry, and absolutely jaw-dropping.
Scales Lake Park itself is an awesome day trip destination in Indiana.
You'll find more than just hiking and mountain biking (or swimming) here! There's also a pool with an awesome water slide, camping, cabins, and SO much more. For a small county part, Scales Lake certainly seems to have it all.
Come out for the lake and the trail, but linger a while and take it all in.
Should you time your visit well, you might even get it all to yourself! We strongly suggest showing up in the early morning during the week. You won't regret it!
