Indiana Dunes National Park is the only official national park in Indiana. Once a state park, it now joins the ranks of Yellowstone and other federally protected patches of land. It's also one of the best parks in Indiana.
The longest trail here is Trail 10, which is an extensive sand dune hike that's better suited for more adventurous hikers.
Spanning 5.5 miles, the trail passes not only through sand dunes, but also a graveyard of dead trees, white pines, and finally, the beaches of Lake Michigan.
Traversing the dunes is much harder than hiking on flat dirt or paved paths. At times it feels like you take a step backward for every two steps forward, especially when hiking uphill.
The views along the way are absolutely stunning. The diverse range of ecosystems at Indiana Dunes National Park is part of the reason why it is protected.
