Porter Beach in northwest Indiana is situated on Lake Michigan and is part of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. It is open daily and includes restrooms, trails, and nearby parking.
The beach is wheelchair accessible with wide-open spaces and smooth sand. It is an excellent spot for sports, running, and all sorts of activities.
Though a lifeguard is not on duty, swimming is allowed at one's own risk. The views of the water are magnificent whether or not the tide is coming in. Swimming is not recommended when the tide is high.
Trails are accessible from the beach. A 4.6-mile sandy path leads to the dunes where hikers will find adventure and diverse ecosystems and landscapes.
The sights from Porter Beach are outstanding. Views stretch as far as the eye can see, and you may even get a glimpse of boats on the horizon.
The beach is near Cowles Bog were visitors are known to find rare plants and wildlife. The Indiana Dunes is known for its diversity and is recognized and protected by the federal government for that reason.
