Indiana is a lovely state, and there are plenty of places all over that you could probably compare to one another in terms of the greenery. One of our favorite places to cover - Shades State Park - is one of those. The greenery is everywhere, from top to bottom, and in the warmer months, it's undeniably perfect for those of us who really love admiring nature in all its splendor. There's another, lesser-known park, though, that is also vibrant and green during the spring and summer months - one that doesn't get as much love as, say, Shades does. Believe it or not, Mounds State Park is one of the greenest places in Indiana, and you'll want to explore it as soon as you can. Come for the greenery, stay for the history!
Mounds State Park is in Anderson and is not to be confused with the similarly-named Mounds State Recreation Area, which is in Brookville.
The park is filled to the brim with intriguing history.
It is home to 10 different earthworks known as mounds, all of which are thought to have been constructed by people of the Adina culture way back in 160 B.C.
The mounds tend to be the main draw to the park, but what a lot of people never realize they ought to appreciate is just how green and lush this area is.
No matter which part of the park you pay a visit to, you're sure to be surrounded by incredible emerald-green grasses, trees, mosses, and more. It's a veritable paradise for those who love nothing more than to appreciate Mother Nature's brilliant, vibrant beauty.
There are a few different trails you can opt to wander during your visit - or, heck, just do them all!
It might require more than one visit, but we don't see a problem with that. You'll want to come back again and again, for different reasons every time.
You could come to admire the landscape one weekend, and then come to learn all about the Adina people and their mounds the next.
We love this little park so much that we've covered it in the past. The hiking, exploring, and nature-loving there is to be done here really can't be overstated.
Come for the greenery, stay for the fascinating history lessons - that's what we always say.
….okay, maybe not quite, but come on - learning can be a blast, especially when it's as hands-on and immersive as the experience at Mounds State Park is. It's one of the greenest places in Indiana, and you're sure to love it.
And, as a bonus point - make sure to visit during the fall, too.
If you love the greenery, you'll probably adore the intense and brilliant fall colors the area develops once summer comes to a close.
