Indiana is a fantastic state for those who enjoy kayaking and canoeing. Between the abundance of beautiful lakes and the 205 days (on average) of sunshine per year, it's easy to see why so many take up the hobby. But if you only have time to take one more kayaking trip before the season is over, we highly recommend heading to Monroe Lake.
Monroe Lake (or Lake Monroe) is the largest lake that Indiana doesn't share with any other state.
It has 10,750 acres (43.5 km2) of water surface area spread over the counties of Monroe and Brown.
This lake is beautiful in any season, but summer and early fall are the most popular times to go.
The crisp air and changing leaves make it an especially delightful experience.
Believe it or not, this lake was man-made between 1960 and 1965.
The lake was created and is still managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District. It still serves as a reservoir.
This is, by far, the largest lake in Indiana. And there's no better way to see it than by kayak.
The surrounding area is home to protected forest, recreational areas, and Indiana's only U.S. Wilderness Area.
You'll find people kayaking and canoeing both solo and in groups practically all year long.
But during the offseason, you'll see fewer and fewer people each time you to.
Spending time at Monroe Lake is so relaxing, you might just want to sit down and take in the beauty all around you.
But if you decide to go kayaking, you won't be disappointed.
Have you ever gone kayaking or canoeing? The next time the urge strikes, check out this beautiful lake.
