Fall is a great time for outdoor exploration with the humidity at a low and cool breezes to keep you feeling comfortable. It's also a great time to witness some of Indiana's most beautiful examples of nature, with foliage at its best. If you're looking for somewhere outdoors to explore, check out these 5 hiking trails that will lead you to incredible pieces of Indiana history.
1. Trail 1 @ Versailles State Park
This gorgeous 2.3 mile trail in Versailles State Park will offer you a peaceful, serene hike. Not only will you encounter magnificent fall foliage and limestone sinkholes, you'll also trek past the historic Busching Covered Bridge which was constructed in 1885 by Thomas Hardman. You'll find this trail at 1387 US-50, Versailles, IN 47042.
2. Trail 3 @ Charlestown State Park
This 2.2 mile trail offers charming scenery and will lead you past an old (closed down) footbridge that used to lead to Rose Island, a former amusement park. You can still visit the island by jumping onto trail 7 which you'll find when you spot an accessible bridge. Check out this historic site that's being slowly recovered by nature at 12500 Highway 62, Charlestown, IN 47111.
3. Tunnell Mill Trail @ Muscatatuck County Park
This little known trail and park holds incredible pieces of history inside. You'll pass the ruins of an old vinegar mill which is still rather perfectly preserved. You'll also come across imbedded fossils throughout this hike, offering an incredible experience. You can take this hike at 325 North State Highway 3 & 7, North Vernon, IN.
4. The 3 Dunes Challenge (Trail 8) @ Indiana Dunes State Park
If you love the beach, this hike is for you. This incredible 1.5 mile long trek through the gorgeous dunes climbs over three of the tallest dunes in the state park and allows you to experience this historical, ecological wonder up close. You can find it at 1600 N 25 E, Chesterton, IN 46304.
5. Adventure Hiking Trail @ O'Bannon Woods State Park
If you're up for a challenge, this hiking trail in O'Bannon Woods State Park is for you. Not only is it 23 miles, making an awesome weekend adventure, it will also take you past some stunning pieces of history. Check out incredible sinkholes, ravines, river bluffs, and caves during this trek. Find it at 7234 Old Forest Rd SW, Corydon, IN 47112.
