Night sky enthusiasts, it's that time of year again: almost time for the amazing, ultra-epic, always breathtaking Geminids meteor shower. From November 19th until December 24th, the stunning Geminids are set to light up the night sky with bright, beautiful meteors and even the occasional fireball. When and where can you see the Geminids meteor shower in Indiana? Let's find out! And while we're at it, don't forget to check out some of the other night sky events in Indiana we have to look forward to.
Sure, the Geminids meteor shower begins in mid-late November, but it doesn't really get going until December.
It will peak this year on December 14th, around 1300 UTC. Since this is 8 a.m. in Indianapolis, you'll want to try and come out in the darkest hours just before sunrise to really take it all in.
The moon will be in waning gibbous phase for this, and lucky for us, the moonrise on the 14th isn't until 11:21 p.m.
Sure, this means the moon will indeed be out if you decide to head out to watch the sky at 3:30 in the morning, but if you choose to go out before bed, you won't have the moon in your way.
...and even if you DO have the moon out while you're trying to watch, it will only drown out the weakest meteors.
The Geminids is known for its high frequency of meteors - up to 120 an hour! - and many of those meteors are beautifully bright.
You'll want to focus your eyes right around the constellation of Orion, as the shower will seem to radiate from that area.
So, who do we have to thank for this stunning display of lights in the sky?
That would be an asteroid known as 3200 Phaethon (yes, they have names), which is quite unique, considering most meteor showers are born from comets instead.
Meteor showers have fascinated and intrigued human beings since the beginning of time, and to this day, it's still an amazing experience to enjoy.
So, grab your favorite people, load up the truck, and bring some blankets - there's a heck of a show to see!
Where should you go to view this amazing meteor shower over Indiana? Easy: head out to one of the several dark-sky destinations in Indiana, like Tippecanoe River State Park or Beverly Shores.
