When it comes to nature in Indiana, there's no shortage of it. However, our natural environment looks rather different than other U.S. landscapes... particularly if you look underground. You see, there are a number of underground caves in Indiana, and several are open to the public. One of the most magnificent caverns to visit is the Bluespring Caverns, a karst cave system with over 21 miles of explored passages. About three miles of its underground river is able to be traversed, and visitors are welcome to do so on a 17-passenger boat. Treat yourself to an underground boat ride at this magnificent local landmark:
The landscape around Bluespring Caverns Park is like any other in Indiana; beautiful, vibrant, and scenic.
However, there's a hidden subterranean world here that is like something from another planet.
The Bluespring Caverns run through Lawrence County, boasting the longest known underground river in the nation. Visitors are welcome to visit each March through October, and most leave in total awe.
This cavern, comprised of Indiana and St. Louis Limestone and a thin layer of shale, remains around 53 degrees all year round.
In addition to offering boat tours of the Myst'ry River, visitors to the Bluespring Caverns Park can hunt for semi-precious gemstones at the on-site mining sluice.
Visitors can get dirty searching for gems, or they can visit the Ruth and Emery Bolton Natural Area and hike the half-mile loop trail around the karst plain sinkhole.
The highlight of every visit, of course, is the one-hour boat tour of this gorgeous underground world. It does necessitate a 400' walk down into the cavern, and a return trip back above ground.
It is a worthy trek, however, as it truly is another world down there. It's home to bizarre animals like the sightless Northern Cavefish.
You may also spot salamanders, bats, and crayfish.
If you are lucky enough to visit after a decent rain, you will be amazed at the might of this subterranean river.
Once all is said and done, commemorate your visit with a souvenir from the gift shop.
