Hidden away in the gorgeous Morgan-Monroe State Forest in Indiana is a magical hiking trail that's truly breathtaking from start to finish. It's almost as if the amazing things simply don't stop coming; you'll experience stellar views from the trailhead to its end, and it's a long one - it comes in at 10.6 miles long! It's the wondrous Three Lakes Trail, and we promise you it's more than worth the effort to complete. Come check out one of the single most beautiful hikes in Indiana - it's open all year.
Once upon a time, this trail really did lead to three lakes.
Nowadays, however, and for the last couple decades, there has really only been two actual lakes. The third was drained following a dam failure on Bean Blossom Lake.
Nevertheless, this hike is worth your time!
Everywhere you turn, it's a beautiful spectacle to behold. No matter the season, you're sure to fall in love.
Seemingly endless emerald forest surrounds every moment of the trek, and it feels more like something out of a fantasy novel than a hiking trail.
Beginning at Cherry Lake, the 10-mile loop trail will end up right back here again should you do the entire thing. It's rated as moderately difficult, and should take a bit over four hours to complete - that is, if you don't stop anywhere along the way.
...and we're not entirely sure you'll be able to simply decide not to stop.
The lakes are stunning, crystal-clear, and sometimes you can even get them all to yourself - just show up early and during the week. It's a popular trail for its immense beauty, but it's entirely possible to get it to yourself for a little while.
Should you feel like you never want to leave, you can set up camp at the established campground.
There's no camping on the trail, but we promise the campground is just as astonishing as the rest of the region.
The Morgan-Monroe State Forest is in and of itself amazing - the Three Lakes Trail truly highlights its wonderful majesty.
As always, make sure to pack in what you pack out and respect the trail! Pack enough water, and be sure to wear good shoes. The trail may be muddy following rain or snowmelt, so make sure to plan accordingly! For more information about the amazing Three Lakes Trail, check out the official Hoosier Hikers Council website.
