The Prairie State has some incredibly diverse landscapes from prairie and lakes to rivers, hills, and rock formations. It's not hard to find a scenic hike in any corner of the state. But scenic overlooks aren't as easy to find, and some are even hidden away along pathways that don't see as much foot traffic. If you would like to visit a scenic overlook that is tucked away along the banks of the Ohio River, head to Elizabethtown and hike the short and sweet Tower Rock Trail.
Starting at the boat ramp, you will find the trailhead for Tower Rock Trail, which seems to be one that not many people know about. You may even find that you have the pathway to yourself while you're hiking.
This is an easy 0.4-mile, out-and-back trail with just 88 feet of elevation, but it's pretty much uphill the entire way. It's primarily used for walking, nature viewing, birdwatching, and camping.
The Tower Rock Campground is located on the banks of the Ohio River where you will have easy access to the Tower Rock Trail.
You'll meander uphill through the forest until you get to the top of this short and sweet trail. Fair warning, though - there have been reports that parts of the trail are overgrown, so be prepared.
Although the Ohio River Overlook is marked, there are several other points where you can have panoramic views of the river below.
The trek is an uphill climb, but it's worth it - the views are absolutely breathtaking from the overlook!
Best of all, you'll get to see the trail and campground's namesake, Tower Rock, up close and personal. This impressive rock towers above the banks of the Ohio River.
If you are staying overnight at the campground, hiking up to the viewpoint during sunset is highly recommended! There's nothing quite like watching the sunset over the Ohio River.
