Illinois has numerous trails covering a wide array of landscapes around the state. Some pathways lead through rock formations and natural rock mazes, while others follow alongside a river or lake or through a forest. If you are in the mood for a lovely forest hike that will enchant you as though you are in a fairytale, make your way to the St. James Farm Forest Preserve, located 30 miles outside of Chicago.
Spanning an area of 595 acres in Warrenville, the St. James Farm Forest Preserve is part of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County.
Within the property is over 100 acres of forest, prairie, and wetlands, including a lake and Spring Brook which is a tributary of the West Branch DuPage River.
Over 300 native plant and wildlife species call the preserve home. Along your hike, keep your eyes open for great blue herons, white-tailed deer, and red-bellied woodpeckers.
The St. James Farm Trail is an easy 4.8-mile loop that leads hikers over footbridges and through the preserve's picturesque natural areas.
Along the way, you will see a gate that looks like it's straight out of a fairytale, especially with the greenery and trees on the other side of it.
Perhaps the most enchanting part is the grassy pathway leading through a tunnel of trees. Take your time as you walk around in amazement. It's almost like walking around the grounds of a castle.
You will love exploring the alluring property of the St. James Farm Forest Preserve. It's unlike any other place in the Prairie State.
