Illinois is home to some of the best state parks in America, but there's a little-known one sitting just outside the Chicago suburbs that offers something extraordinary. Located in Yorkville, Silver Springs State Park is home to a spring-fed pool of water that every Illinoisan needs to visit.
Natural springs are a world wonder, and we've got an amazing one right here in Illinois. Check out this outstanding oasis.
Silver Springs State Park draws locals from all over the state to marvel at Illinois' very own spring-fed pool.
The park was purchased and dedicated in 1969 and spans 1,350 acres of Kendal County.
The spring remains clear and warm even in the winter. When the sun shines, the spring sparkles, giving it its namesake.
Fox River flows through the northern half of the park. Fish like bluegill, carp, catfish, and northern pike populate the river, while pheasants and other small game wander the woods.
There are over 30 acres of restored prairie that represents a true Midwest landscape. Native plants include various types of oak and hackberry trees as well as Indian grass, coneflower, and leadplant.
Indigenous peoples once populated this area of Illinois at the end of the last Ice Age, which was over 10,000 years ago.
During the warm months, modern-day visitors can enjoy fishing, hunting, hiking, and a seven-mile horse riding trail. Winter fun can be enjoyed if you like cross-country skiing, sledding, and ice skating. There's also a four-mile snow mobile trail.
The spring is warm and bubbly anytime of year, so be it winter, spring, summer, or fall, there's always a reason to stop by. Plan a whole day at this wonderful Illinois state park for a family fun experience that reunites you with the outdoors.
Silver Springs State Park is located at 13608 Fox Rd. Yorkville, Illinois.
