There's no doubt that there are some extraordinary views around the Prairie State. You'll experience vistas of the Mississippi River Valley from atop Inspiration Point near Wolf Lake or you can take a trail that's just chock full of scenic overlooks at Starved Rock State Park, for example. We certainly have plenty of ways to catch some scenery! There is one lesser-known scenic overlook in Illinois at which you can experience panoramic views and it's one you'll definitely want to stop at.
There's a scenic overlook along the Great River Road on U.S. Hwy 20 that everyone should stop at.
While the Great River Road is a designated National Scenic Byway that runs alongside the Mississippi River, treating travelers to some of the best views in the state, a stop at Long Hollow Scenic Overlook is like the icing on the cake.
Located just before Galena in the town of Elizabeth, Long Hollow Scenic Overlook is the perfect spot to stop and relax for a while. It even offers travelers picnic tables, shelters, and restrooms in order to maximize time spent here.
Take in the wondrous views of the valley below. The scenery is seemingly endless from this vantage point.

Although the scenery is gorgeous no matter what time you come to the Long Hollow Scenic Overlook, there's quite a spectacular show of colors during the fall. It's as though red, orange, and gold hues are painted on the pastoral landscape.
It's also quite magical in the wintertime with the landscape covered in a blanket of white. But no matter the time of year, Long Hollow Scenic Overlook is a worthwhile stop to make.
