There is no doubt that some state parks in Illinois draw in quite a crowd. People travel from all over to spend a day (or even a weekend), exploring and discovering all that the park has to offer. Beaver Dam State Park in Macoupin County, is one underrated destination that not enough visitors take the time to explore. Here, you’ll find plenty of amenities for a charming day trip, including a fabulous trail that’s perfect for an afternoon stroll.
Beaver Dam State Park is located approximately seven miles southwest of Carlinville, and we love recommending the area to visitors.
This Illinois state park encompasses 750 acres and was named after a beaver dam that created the lake in the park. Unfortunately, today, most of the beavers are gone from the area.
Beaver Dam State Park is home to many activities that will keep you busy from dawn to dusk. Boat, fish, cross-country ski, and even camp while at this underrated destination.
Just make sure you don’t forget your hiking boots. Beaver Dam State Park features up to eight miles of trails that are just waiting to be explored. Although, one trail that we recommend is the Beaver Dam Loop.
This loop trail is approximately 1.7 miles and takes you all around the lake. There is very little elevation gain and the trail is well maintained, creating a fairly easy adventure.
As you walk, you’ll hike right along the edge of the lake, allowing you to capture some incredible water views.
There are also bridges you will cross …
… and wooded areas you will walk through.
This trail is open throughout the year and every season is absolutely beautiful on this hike. You can even bring your favorite furry friend, as long as they stay on a leash.
The Beaver Dam Loop Trail may not be a difficult journey, but it sure is unforgettable. It’s just one activity you won’t want to miss when you visit this underrated state park in Illinois.
