Allerton Park was originally built as a private estate in 1900 by a Chicago native, and it was called "The Farms." Today, the public is welcome to visit for free daily from 8 a.m. until sunset.
Situated about 25 miles from Urbana-Champaign, the property was donated to the University of Illinois in 1946 for research and recreation.
All together, the estate consists of 1,500 acres of woodland and prairies. There are also 14 formal gardens that astound and amaze, transporting you to a setting fit for a queen.
Throughout the gardens, there are over 100 ornaments and statues to find as well as numerous hiking trails and a 10-acre meadow.
Visitors may even stay the night on the grounds to get the full experience. Guests may stay in the Allerton Mansion, Gate House, the House in the Woods, or Evergreen Lodge.
Allerton Park is popular for weddings and other formal occasions, and many locals visit for the summer concert series.
