Hickory Creek Preserve in northeast Illinois is a 1,500-acre preservation system that is home to a diverse range of ecosystems and wildlife.
You'll find wetlands, savannas, prairies, forests, ponds, creeks, and more when you explore the grounds and hike the trails of this diverse nature preserve.
Wildlife also abounds here. There are more than 50 species of bird, a plethora of fish, deer, and many more critters native to Illinois and the Midwest.
There is a 1.25-mile trail as well as a 2.25-mile trail, both of which are good for hiking and biking as well as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the winter.
Other fun activities enjoyed here include picnicking, geocaching, fishing, and photo-taking. Visitors can't get enough of the views.
The diversity here truly does not end. One minute you'll be deep in the forest and the next you'll find yourself traversing a wetland or grassy savanna.
Bridges, marked paths, and more will keep you on track along this fairly easy hike. Even kids love to explore the wonders here.
