Living in a place for a while tends to make us somewhat complacent. We have our routines, our favorite restaurants and shops, and we feel like we know our hometown and home state better than anyone. Next time you're in the mood for a scenic hike, set off on the Busse Woods Loop Trail in Illinois. It will show you a beautiful side of Illinois that you might not have taken the time to appreciate in some time.
Tucked in Ned Brown Forest Preserve in Rolling Meadows, the Busse Woods Loop Trail tallies just under 13 miles. While that might seem long, the trail is popular with hikers of all ages and skill levels.
One of the selling points of the trail is it's paved for the duration, which means you can walk, run, bike, or even push a stroller without much difficulty.
In the winter months, especially after a fresh snowfall, you might want to go cross-country skiing. Dogs are allowed on the trail, too, as long as they're kept on a leash.
The predominately flat trail will lead you through the forest preserve, where you'll be greeted by gorgeous natural scenery as you make a circle around the Busse Reservoir.
Journey through the woods, but be prepared for crowds, especially if you're hiking on a nice day or on the weekend.
You might also catch sight of local wildlife, including grazing elk.
You can start your hike along the Busse Woods Loop Trail from one of several trailheads, including the Busse Forest Elk Pasture and the Ned Brown Meadow.
