Often overshadowed by its neighboring state park, Starved Rock, the wonderful Matthiessen State Park, along the Illinois River in the northern part of the Prairie State, is home to one of the most gorgeous waterfalls in the Midwest.
At 45 feet high, this lesser-known yet still wildly popular waterfall is a seasonal waterfall that is just beginning to see some autumn colors.
Soon, the entire park will be engulfed in yellows, oranges, and reds, transforming the park into a whole new world of fall colors and scenery.
Even with little to no water, this gorge is very lovely to see, and we hope for more rain so that the falls rush forth and can be seen in their full splendor.
The canyon itself is 100 feet deep and the stone all around is sandstone. Creeks, trails, bridges, and more are waiting to be discovered all around.
For some, fall is the best time to visit this state park, though it is open year-round. The autumn waterfall is a sight to see that is camera-worthy.
It's worth a trip from any region or corner of the state (or nation for that matter) to see the falls and hike the trails at this wonderful place.
