Hike This Ancient Forest In Illinois That’s Home To 800-Year-Old Trees
Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge in Illinois is home to ancient bald cypress trees and diverse wildlife, offering unique hiking and canoeing experiences.
Located in southern Illinois, Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1990 to protect, manage, and restore 15,000 acres of land. This refuge provides an important habitat for a variety of wildlife including several threatened and endangered species and it is home to an ancient forest of 800-year-old bald cypress trees.
Located within the Cache River watershed between the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, the biodiverse Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge is home to a forest of bottomland tree species, the bald cypress, that are hundreds of years old.
There are two trails on the refuge. From the parking lot, take the one-mile Hickory Bottoms Trail that leads through the lowlands forest filled with bald cypress.
The Limekiln Springs Trail, which you can pick up from the parking area south of Bellrose Overlook viewing platform, leads to the Lower Cache River. This trail has boardwalks that guide visitors through parts of the swamp where you can get a closer look at some of the ancient trees.
The cypress-tupelo swamps are flooded year-round and contain some of the oldest trees located east of the Mississippi River. Four distinct regions also overlap here: the Ozark Hills to the west, Central Plateau to the north, the Interior Low Plateau to the east, and the Gulf Coastal Plains to the south.
If you have a canoe or kayak, bring it with you and get a close-up look at some of the 800-year-old bald cypress trees on Eagle Pond. This is one of the best ways to explore the area.
One of the bald cypress trees at the refuge has over 200 knees. These are vertical projections that grow from the trees' roots and can be seen above the water. It's quite a remarkable sight!

First, Pygmy Hippos Are NOT Common Hippos
Cassy Kutilek, curator of large mammals and carnivores at Lincoln Park Zoo, said the cousins have some key differences.
🦛 The pygmy hippo weighs 400–600 pounds, but the common hippo can weigh thousands.
🦛 The smaller hippo is naturally more solitary.
🦛 The pygmy hippo is also less aquatic, preferring to stay on the edge of a bank in a swamp.
How Did Pygmy Hippos Arrive at Chicago Zoos?
Pygmy hippos are an endangered species: Their natural habitat of West African rainforests is threatened by deforestation and human activity, said Joan Daniels, Brookfield Zoo associate vice president of animal care and conservation.
The southwest suburban zoo got Banana in 2022 after she was born in a facility in Florida a couple of years earlier. Now 5 years old, Banana is old enough to have her own calf, but she doesn’t have a mate.
Love isn’t quite yet in the air at the North Side zoo either: 25-year-old Pogo and 16-year-old Annie still aren’t pregnant a year after they came to Chicago together. Kutilek said Pogo has been a “gentleman” in initiating the mating process.

Are All Pygmy Hippos So Slippery and Sassy?

Pygmy hippos are slippery because they secrete a substance that protects their taut skin by acting as an antiseptic, sunscreen, and bug spray. Sometimes the secretion is called “blood sweat” because it has a reddish hue, but it is neither blood nor sweat, Kutilek said.
Why else are they slippery? Water and lots of it. Pygmy hippos love water because the sun can dehydrate their skin quickly, Daniels said.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L.
