Idaho is downright magical during winter time. During these cold winter months, many Idahoans will opt to stay inside instead of enduring the frigid weather. However, what if there was a way you could experience all of Idaho's winter glory while staying warm at the same time? Well, I'm here to tell you that you can do just that! Scenic drives aren't just for the summer time. In fact, there's no better time than now to go out and take a long, beautiful winter drive in Idaho's back country.
Eastern Idaho is a pretty stunning place, especially during winter. This area has a little bit of everything including panoramic mountain landscapes, waterfalls, quaint small towns, wildlife, and more.
The Teton Scenic Byway takes you through all the best parts of Eastern Idaho. This incredible drive is the perfect way to experience Idaho's snow-covered beauty during this time of year.
The byway runs north to south almost right next to the Idaho-Wyoming border. You'll start off in Swan Valley, a beautiful town of only 204 people.
This is where you'll begin your 70-mile journey through some of the most breathtaking Idaho landscapes. This scenic byway takes you through the majestic Teton Valley which looks like a winter wonderland during this time of year.
As you drive northward towards the small town of Victor, you'll witness the tall and might Teton Mountain Range looming in the distance. Rising over 13,700 feet above sea level, the Tetons are some of Idaho's most treasured mountain landscapes.
You're definitely going to want to stop the car, get out, and stare in awe at these beauties. Not to mention the fact that the Tetons are home to dozens of incredible hiking trails if you're in the mood for a little outdoor adventure.
You'll continue on the byway (with the mountains getting larger and larger) until you arrive at Driggs. Driggs is a charming little community of approximately 1,660 people. This is a good place to stop and rest for a bit before you continue on your drive.
Driggs is a quintessential small Idaho town, and is definitely worth visiting for a bit. Get something to eat and be around the locals for awhile before you hit the road again. Winter sports enthusiasts will also be pleased to know that the Grand Targhee Resort is located right outside of Driggs which is home to some of the most amazing skiing and snowboarding terrain in the West.
After Driggs, you'll encounter miles upon miles of empty fields. These fields which are usually vibrant green during the spring and summer are covered in stark white in the winter.
It's an amazing sight to see. Fun fact: these fields are actually potato fields and the area is the leading producer of potatoes in the world. This might possibly be the most "Idaho" drive there is.
This area is also an extremely historic region of the Gem State.
During the early 1800s, fur trappers would gather in the Teton Valley for their famous rendezvous. It's pretty amazing to be able to drive through this awe-inspiring region today which is probably just as beautiful today as it was back then.
The scenic byway finally terminates in Ashton where it connects with the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway.
The Teton Scenic Byway is one of the most gorgeous drives in the world. If you're looking for a unique winter activity that allows you take in all of Idaho's amazing winter beauty without freezing your butt off, then this is it. Just keep in mind to use caution in winter driving conditions. Some areas of the highway may be closed off due to snow or icy conditions during the winter.
