With an impressive 27 state parks around the Gem State, it may seem challenging to find the best parks in Idaho. However, when it comes to state parks with exquisite beauty, there is one that tends to top the list. Ponderosa State Park is located near McCall, and it sits next to the stunning Payette Lake. From the nature lover to the adventure-seeker to even someone who just wants some time away from the worries of real life, everyone will find something to enjoy at this state park. It’s one area in Idaho that you’ll likely fall in love with the minute you arrive.
Ponderosa State Park provides nearly 1,500 acres of natural scenery for you to enjoy. You will find it approximately 107 miles north of Boise, nestled in the mountains, and sitting at 5,050 feet in elevation.
Ponderosa State Park in Idaho actually consists of two units that are not connected to one another — the peninsula and north beach. The Peninsula is the most visited area of this park and is home to the boat launch, Lakeview day-use area, the Peninsula Campground, and the RV Campground.
The minute you arrive at this state park, you’ll notice its beauty. In fact, in May 1900, the Idaho Statesman described this area as “one of the most beautiful spots in Idaho.” With lush forests, lake views, and more, this truly is one of the most beautiful state parks in Idaho.
If you want to experience just one jaw-dropping view, head to the scenic overlook at Osprey Point. Here, you will capture the awe-inspiring scenery of Payette Lake and on clear days, you can see for miles.
If time isn’t on your side and you only have one day, check out the Lakeview day-use area. You’ll find this area immediately after entering the state park.
This day-use area is home to beaches, picnic areas, a volleyball court, and restrooms. This is also the home of this state park’s visitor center.
There is no better way to enjoy Idaho's beauty than on a scenic hike. There are multiple hiking trails throughout this area, some a little easier than others.
If you are searching for an easy hiking trail that the entire family can enjoy, check out the Lily Marsh Hike. This 2.3-mile trail takes you through pine forests and gives you even more remarkable views of the lake. It is a well-maintained trail and perfect for a summer day.
Ponderosa State Park is a terrific place to stay and spend a few days. Not only are there multiple campgrounds, but there are lakeview cabins you rent for a unique overnight stay.
These cabins sleep between four to six individuals. There is a two-night minimum requirement for each cabin. You can learn more about these cabins on the Idaho Parks and Recreation website.
Ponderosa State Park is truly breathtaking. It is one of the most beautiful state parks in Idaho and you need to see it to believe it.
