The Mount Roothaan Trail is a relatively short hike in the Selkirks, but it definitely packs a punch with views of jaw-dropping mountain scenery. Take a look:
Hiding out in the Idaho Panhandle, Mount Roothaan is a hiking destination that's definitely worth checking out. Boasting tremendous views of mountains, lakes, and the wonder known as Chimney Rock, this alpine trail definitely packs a punch.
Sitting along a rugged crest in the western Rocky Mountains, Mount Roothaan is one of the state's best-kept secrets. Its remote location means that it's not exactly popular, so hikers can enjoy these incredible views in addition to sweet, sweet solitude.
The remote location also means it takes some effort to reach the trailhead, but trust us, it's worth it. Come prepared with a high-clearance, AWD vehicle, and you should be able to traverse the forest roads just fine.
To get to the trailhead, take Idaho State Highway 57 north from Priest River approximately 23 miles. Then, turn east toward Coolin and drive for 13 miles up Priest Lake’s East Shore Road. Turn off that road onto Hunt Creek Road No. 24, and drive for another 12 miles on forest roads.
The trail itself is just about 3-miles out-and-back, with nearly 1,200-feet in elevation gain. There are definitely some steep sections on the trail that can kick your butt, so be sure of your fitness level before taking on the trail. All in all, this is a moderate hike that provides a good workout in addition to epic views.
And yes, the views are THAT good. From the trail, hikers have a picturesque vantage point of Priest Lake and the Selkirk Crest. The mountain vista goes on for as long as the eye can see. f course, you'll also have a great view of Chimney Rock, a massive tower of granite that dominates the mountain scenery.
The trail to Mount Roothaan is accessible year-round, although you'll want to bring snowshoes in the wintertime. Also, sometimes the road to the trailhead are closed for logging, so be sure to check the route ahead of time to make sure it's open.
