If you enjoy happening upon hidden waterfalls while enjoying the beautiful naturescape of Idaho, you're in luck! Today we're going to take a little trip to Star Falls. Also known as Caldron Linn Falls, it's a hidden gem of a waterfall that sits on the Snake River near Murtaugh, just outside the Twin Falls metro area. The French-inspired name refers to the stunning and frothy, agitated watershed at the base of the falls which resembles a bubbling cauldron during peak runoff. (So cool, right?!) While often overshadowed by its taller and more predominant Magic Valley counterparts, Caldron Linn definitely makes for a phenomenal day trip or scenic Sunday afternoon getaway, so be sure to check out this glorious hidden waterfall in Idaho the next chance you get!
Star Falls really is one of Idaho's most splendid hidden gems.
The impressive, double-tiered runoff of Caldron Linn is created by the Snake's forced passage through a narrow portion of the canyon. The excess pressure makes a spectacular display of water and mist before the river travels further down the canyon to Shoshone Falls.
Here, where the Snake River boils, history was made.
While the falls themselves are only 25 feet high, the mesmerizing scenery around this portion of the river is stunning enough, in addition to its rich history. In 1811, Pacific Fur Company founder John Jacob Astor of New York -- a name you might recognize from the movie Titanic, although not of the same character -- launched an expedition under the lead of Wilson Price Hunt in order to trade with local Native Americans. The expedition ran into trouble around Twin Falls due to the Snake ("Mad River"), and a number of the party was lost to capsized canoes near the falls, some remnants of which can be seen at the National Idaho Museum.
To get to these hidden falls, visitors must weave in and out of sagebrush carpeted rockways, but it's an easy walk.
A bonus for recreation enthusiasts, a mere two miles below Caldron Linn the spring whitewater rapids are some of the best in the country with sixteen major rapids and quick drops. Depending on the year, Caldron Linn has also been known to freeze over, creating quite the icy spectacle.
But all the photos in the land of the Internet couldn't do this scenic location justice, so enjoy this stunning drone footage:
The footage is phenomenal, but just a glimpse of the real deal. Special thanks to Vortex Drones for an awesome job capturing this Idaho wonder!
When visiting Caldron Linn, be sure to keep your children and/or pets secure; currently, the falls aren't developed and there is no safety rail or concrete walkway along the falls.
