Most people are surprised to learn that the Hawaiian Islands are home to countless incredible farms, ranches, and sprawling fields. From macadamia nut and local coffee farms, to cattle ranches, organic spirit distilleries, and even honey bee and goat dairy operations, the Hawaiian Islands are home to many agricultural ventures. And while these farms in Hawaii are all truly unique, this little-known destination stands out in a class all on its own. Surprisingly enough, there's only one coconut farm in Hawaii (that we can find online), and we can't wait to tell you all about it below.
You’ll see coconut palms everywhere you look in Hawaii, but it’s not always easy to find fresh coconuts, and it’s even more difficult to find a coconut farm. In fact, Punakea Palms is, surprisingly, the only farm of its kind in Hawaii.
This one-of-a-kind farm is nestled on 13 acres in the foothills of the West Maui Mountains with panoramic views of Lahaina and the Pacific Ocean.
The family-owned farm features more than 250 fully mature, fruit-bearing palms spread across two acres that produce a whopping 20,000 coconuts each year. Punakea Palms also offers educational tours to promote the coconut, which is an often misunderstood fruit.
Each two-hour tour is tailored to the interests of the visitors. You might learn about the method of "natural farming" used here and popular across Asia, Maui’s perfect coconut-growing climate, the various uses of the fruit beyond oil, the stages of coconut during its 14-month maturation process, and more.
Guests will also participate in all stages of coconut cultivation and consumption, while basking in the natural beauty that surrounds the farm, of course. Learn how to safely open your own coconut and make coconut milk, then take home fresh, handmade coconut products — the perfect souvenir.
The tours are limited to a certain number of guests, so they tend to fill up quickly. You'll want to make a reservation on their website.
If you love coconuts as much as we do, you’ll want to plan a visit to Punakea Palms. After all, this is the only place you can experience the sights and tastes of a working coconut farm in Hawaii.
For more information, you can visit the farm's website or follow them on Facebook.
If you love learning about and visiting Hawaii's unique farms, this cacao farm absolutely must be added to your Oahu bucket list.
