With approximately 750 miles of stunning coastline, the Hawaiian Islands are home to countless incredible beaches and coastal secrets. While we certainly love our beach days (let's be honest though - who doesn’t?), sometimes you just need a little more adventure. Enter the dreamy Makapu’u tide pools, located on the southeastern tip of Oahu.
The lava rock lined coasts of the Hawaiian Islands provide create perfect conditions for tide pools, and while all of Hawaii’s tide pools are spectacular, we are absolutely enamored by the picturesque Makapu’u tide pools.
These utterly divine tide pools are perfect for days where you want a little more adventure than nearby beaches typically allow, though unfortunately, these tide pools aren’t necessarily easy to access.
You’ll find the steep and rocky trail that leads to this picturesque series of tide pools near the halfway point on the Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail near a whale watching lookout, but unlike the main trail, which is full-paved, the path to the tide pools isn’t exactly maintained well - so venture at your own risk.
There is little better way to cool off after a hike on a warm summer day than taking a dip in these crystalline, saltwater pools - some of which can be up to ten feet deep!
And if merely swimming in Hawaiian tide pools isn’t worth the climb, the views are unbeatable.
Not only will you find sweeping panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean…
...but the volcanic landscape is positively mesmerizing.
You might even catch a glimpse of the iconic Makapu’u Lighthouse.
On a sunny weekend day, you’re sure to find that the tide pools are rather crowded, but don’t let that fool you: the hike down to the tide pools can be treacherous, and if you’re not an experienced hiker, we suggest hitting up the nearby Alan Davis Beach Park.
Because the Makapu’u tide pools are fed by ocean waves, we must issue a friendly warning about the risks associated with strong ocean currents, rogue waves, and slippery rocks. It is advised that you check weather reports and ocean conditions before heading out for the day, always watch your step, and never turn your back to the ocean.
If you like the Makapu'u tide pools, we think you'll absolutely love these 12 Hawaiian swimming holes.
