Nowhere in America will you find a denser concentration of waterfalls than throughout the Hawaiian Islands. From waterfall hikes perfect for outdoor adventurers to waterfalls hiding in plain site, Hawaii waterfalls are truly second to none. And while there are countless waterfall swimming holes across Hawaii, there is one you’ll find on Maui’s Road to Hana that is an absolute dream and was named one of America’s Best Swimming Holes by Men’s Health Magazine.
Located near Mile Marker 25 on Maui’s Hana Highway, Makapipi Falls is visible from the highway’s bridge, giving drivers a unique vantage point you won’t find anywhere else.
The waterfall plummets into a striking blue pool, and is an absolute must-stop on Maui’s Road to Hana.
While the waterfall is gorgeous from above, it is even better once you tackle the short, yet steep, hike down to the water’s edge to check it out up close.
Unfortunately, the strength of the falls is often dependent on rainfall - so here's to hoping you catch it on a good day.
To find the falls, you will have to park on the side of the road past the bridge near Mile Marker 25, and walk back to the bridge that crosses the Makapipi Stream and Falls for this gorgeous view.
A Safety Note: Because this incredible waterfall is stream-fed, it is important to issue a friendly warning about the risks associated with flash flooding, and leptospirosis bacteria found in many of Hawaii’s natural pools. It is advised that you check weather reports and ocean conditions before heading out for the day, never swim here if you have open wounds, and to always watch your step.
