If there’s one beverage Hawaii is known for, it’s coffee. After all, Hawaii is the only American state with land able to grow coffee. And while we love all of the incredible coffee farms you’ll find across the Hawaiian Islands — there is one variety that has become world-famous. Grown in a small section of fertile volcanic soil on Hawaii Island’s Kona coast, Kona coffee is definitely a cut above any coffee you can find, well, pretty much anywhere. To experience the best coffee this famous region has to offer and to learn about the history of coffee in this region and the impact it’s had on Hawaii, head on over to the Kona Coffee Living History Farm.
Located on the Daisaku Uchida Coffee Farm along Hawaii Island’s famous Kona Coast, this unique Hawaii attraction is an award-winning, historic farm that shares the story of Kona’s coffee pioneers during the early 20th century.
Not only is this must-see attraction one of the most unique coffee farms on the island, but it is also the only living history coffee farm in the nation.
Donated to the Kona Historical Society by Sherwood Greenwell, this open-air agricultural museum is truly one-of-a-kind and allows guests to step back in time to another era as they wander around the 5.5-acre farm that dates back to 1900.
History is brought to life by costumed interpreters who demonstrate agricultural activities, traditional crafts, and the everyday tasks of those who lived here more than 100 years ago.
Walk amongst the coffee trees in the orchard and learn how farmers mill and dry this world-famous coffee. Visit the original 1920s farmhouse as well as the coffee mill, where you will learn all about life on the farm and coffee farming.
Before you leave, don’t forget to sample the farm’s 100 percent Kona coffee and purchase some to take back home. All proceeds from both admission and product sales directly support educational programs and preservation projects.
If you’ve ever wanted to learn everything there is to know about the history of Kona coffee, a visit to the Kona Coffee Living History Farm is a must. Coffee lovers and history buffs alike will want to add this gem to their Hawaii bucket list.
