Kauai is home to many spectacular places, including the awe-inspiring Waimea Canyon.
Known as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," throughout the years it’s been carved out of the red soil by the Waimea River. This river is not only beautiful, but is also one of the oldest rivers in Hawaii.
The Waimea River cuts through the Waimea Canyon State Park.
It’s the longest and largest river on Kauai. And it's the third longest river in the Hawaiian islands.
Beginning at Alakai Swamp, the largest high-elevation swamp in the world, the Waimea River flows down to cut a swarth through the Waimea River Canyon.
After leaving the canyon and its iconic scenery, the river empties into the ocean in the town of Waimea. It’s a gorgeous meandering waterway that stretches 22.2 miles.
There are plenty of ways to get up close and present to the river, including some fantastic hikes.
Take the Waimea Canyon Trail in Kauai. You’ll have the pleasure of crossing this suspension bridge in the Pu'u Ka Pele State Forest Reserve, where you can walk right over the waters of the Waimea River.
Others choose to packrat the river.
This is a wonderfully adventurous way to see the river and popular activity for pack rafting enthusiasts. No official commercial outfitters run the river, so make sure to research everything you need to know before heading out.
You'll find Class III-V runs along the river, so be sure to time it right for your skill level.
Others may just enjoy hiking down into the canyon to soak in the beauty. And if you find you can’t quite tear yourself away, there’s plenty of camping opportunities in Waimea Canyon State Park.
