Spring is in the air, and we can’t wait to explore all of these magical destinations scattered across the Hawaiian Islands. While Hawaii might not experience winter like our mainland friends, it has been rainy and chilly lately, and we can’t wait for warmer weather, sunny days, and blooming flowers. We absolutely love the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm, which is nestled on the slopes of Haleakala on Maui, but today, we’re heading to a little-known orchid garden and farm on Hawaii Island we seriously can’t get enough of.
Nestled just outside of Hilo, which is known as the orchid capital of the world, in the small village of Volcano on Hawaii Island, Akatsuka Orchid Gardens tops our travel wish list this spring.
Established in 1974, this orchid garden was established by Moriyasu Akatsuka, an experienced orchid grower who worked in a family orchid nursery in Japan. When he moved to Hawaii, he brought his knowledge with him and founded this one-of-a-kind garden and farm, and we couldn't be more excited to show you around.
This Volcano-based garden has been a prominent grower of orchids for more than thirty years, and their 8,000-square-foot greenhouse and showroom features more than 500 blooming orchids on display.
Akatsuka is constantly evolving with the floral industry, and the orchids you’ll find on display are proof. From Dendrobiums and Oncidiums to Phalaenopsis, Miltonia, and Odontoglossums, you’ll be in awe from the moment you walk through the door. That’s not even to mention the gorgeous smell of these fragrant flowers.
Beyond orchids, Akatsuka offers anthuriums, bromeliads, and tropical cut flower arrangements. The garden is Hawaii Agriculture Certified and can ship your floral needs locally or anywhere on the United States mainland.
This colorful destination will surely brighten your day, and while we love simply admiring these gorgeous plants, we recommend taking the full tour.
Tours of their orchid farm are offered Tuesday through Friday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Only the 11 a.m. tours include lunch, but both include an expert-guided 45-minute tour through their orchid maze and greenhouse growing facility.
Guests will learn all about orchid growth stages and care as they participate in a guided hands-on orchid planting activity. You’ll be able to bring your orchid home, and sample their original Poha berry ice cream!
Did you know that Hilo is the orchid capital of the world? Don’t worry, we didn’t either. Now that you’re in the know, however, we think a visit to Akatsuka Orchid Gardens should 100 percent be on your agenda for this spring.
Akatsuka Orchid Gardens is located at 11-3051 Volcano Rd., Volcano, HI 96785, and is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. They are closed Sunday.
