When summer starts to roll to a close and those first few brisk mornings come along, I feel a joy akin to a kid on Christmas morning. As someone who hates the heat but lives in a humid climate, I start to truly feel alive in the fall. There are so many things to love about autumn: the foods, the festivals, the brilliantly beautiful fall foliage in Georgia. Most of the North Georgia area enjoys pretty spectacular colors. Head to somewhere in the well-traveled Northeast Georgia mountains like Brasstown Bald, Tallulah Gorge, or Helen and you'll get to enjoy all the splendor of the season. But what about once you've hit up the top destinations and are looking for something a bit lesser-known? Head over to Summerville and check out James H. "Sloppy" Floyd State Park. This place might not make many lists of "best places to see the leaves change in Georgia," but it's just as beautiful as the better-known spots. Check it out:
"Sloppy" Floyd State Park is tucked away in Summerville, a small town of about 4,000 people in northwest Georgia.
The park is named after a Georgia State Representative who served for more than two decades.
The park's 550 acres are incredibly beautiful. You'll find two lakes, a playground, boardwalk, and small campground.
There's even an old marble mine here, complete with a small waterfall.
This is a lovely park to visit at any time of year, and it's quite underrated. Many who don't live in the surrounding area aren't even aware it exists.
The park boasts miles of trails, perfect for getting out and enjoying the fall foliage.
This is one of our favorite state parks in Georgia to visit, especially in the fall.
It's absolutely perfect for an autumn adventure.
