As one of the seven natural wonders in Georgia, Radium Springs has an impressive history within the state.
For many years, the springs served as a swimming hole for visitors to the area, as one of Georgia’s most impressive resort locations.
However many years prior to that, this natural oasis in Georgia served as a local fishing and watering hole for the Creek Indians.
The earliest ever recorded history of Radium Springs comes from Hernando de Soto’s expedition in 1540.
The spring was originally known as Blue Spring, because of the rich blue water that was deep and vibrant.
The cause for the marvelous color is due to the rich amounts of radium, which is extremely rare and naturally occurring, but is significant due to the luminescent blue color.
What is so fascinating about Radium Springs is that it pumps 70,000 gallons of clear, 68-degree water per minute from an underground cave.
While swimming is no longer an option at Radium Springs, it is still a magical place to sit and appreciate the natural beauty of Georgia.
There are unique gardens to wander about, interactive educational tidbits throughout the area, and exploration of the remaining ruins.
It is a free park in the state of Georgia that is worth visiting with the entire family.
Especially because you may not have the opportunity to see water this clear and blue anywhere else in the state.
