There are a lot of great places to go when the weather is warm in Georgia. We've got lakes, waterfalls, and rivers where you can escape the heat with a dip in cool waters. One of our favorites is Mossy Creek Park, hidden away in the small town of Lula. This "park" is more like small water access area than a large state park with amenities, but it's an absolutely fantastic hidden gem in rural Georgia for the whole family to enjoy some summer splashing in the sun. Parking is free and it's a good spot for swimming, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, or tubing.
The recreation area is at the spot where Mossy Creek and the Chattahoochee River meet.
It's a small recreation area that provides plenty access to the water, but it doesn't have the acreage or amenities that most state parks offer. There are no bathrooms or picnic tables here, just a peaceful spot to enjoy nature.
There are several areas where the water can be easily accessed, whether you're looking to wade, swim, or canoe.
To access Mossy Creek, you'll need to take the gravel road marked Home Place Road. There is another, smaller, road nearby with the same name. The correct Home Place Road is unpaved, pretty narrow at points, and can get flooded out after rains, so drive with care and take an SUV or truck if possible.
This is a great, secluded spot to enjoy the peace and serenity of nature, whether you're looking to meditate, read a book, or catch some fish.
Please note that there are not any trash cans at this area, so make sure to bring along your own bags to dispose of any waste. As always when out in nature, leave no trace behind so that others can enjoy the area for years to come.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. I am always advocating for a slower pace of life. When you boil down to what is important in life you find that we don’t actually need to be in a rush. The State Botanical Garden of Georgia is part of the University of Georgia in Athens so there is a big emphasis on education here. You can learn all about the different plants and insects in this perfectly manicured garden. There is plenty to see and do by simply walking around but they also offer plenty of tours and events to really dig into the knowledge ready to be unlocked in this place.
I find gardens like this to be incredibly peaceful and exciting. Around every corner, you will find lush green plant life with splashes of bright flowers in an array of colors just waiting to be discovered.
At the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, natural beauty and man-made art pair together to create a feast for your eyes. While strolling around the property take some time to just sit by the fountain and listen to the trickling water, the sound of the singing birds, and the chirping of insects.
One of the main focuses is the showcasing of southern horticulture which houses some of my favorite plant life. The ecosystem here in the south is fantastic, with some rather unique flowers and greenery. They do well to tend and care for these plants so that when you go you will have a wonderful experience and come away learning a thing or two about native plant life.
There are many different gardens located inside, and if you have kids with you, then a stop by The Alice H. Richards Children's Garden is a must. This section is meant to spark the imagination of kids and adults alike for the education and love of nature. Little ones can enjoy a fossil wall, a granite map of Georgia, and a treehouse while they are there. The kid inside of me is always delighted when I get to see my own children light up whenever we find something like this. Truth be told, I may have more fun than they do.
