Summertime makes for the perfect time to bust out a thermos of coffee, stay up until the wee hours of the morning, and catch a meteor shower that will light up the Georgia sky. While there have already been quite a few meteor showers this year, we have the perfect one happening this summer and you'll want to know where to watch.
One of the most spectacular meteor showers in the country occurs every summer and this year you’ll have a front row seat.
Due to the massive debris left behind from the comet Swift-Tuttle, the summer sky becomes lit up every July & August with a shower of light like no other.
For many Georgians, it will be hard to watch the Perseid meteor shower from particular places in the state, especially larger cities with light pollution.
Yet, we have the perfect place to snag a front row seat this year.
Stephen C. Foster State Park in the Okefenokee Swamp has been awarded with the title of one of the best places to stargaze in the country.
In addition, the park has also become one of the few International Dark Sky Park’s in the world.
This means that if you’re looking to grab a seat to one of the best meteor showers of the year in Georgia, then you're are in luck.
With little-to-no light pollution, guests to Stephen C. Foster State Park won’t miss a thing—and we’re talking about 60 to 100 meteors per hour at its peak.
So grab the whole family, plan an overnight trip this summer to camp at Stephen C. Foster State Park, and see for yourself what having a front row seat to this meteor shower is like.
The Perseid Meteor Shower takes place every year from July to August. The peak of the meteor shower occurs from August 12 to August 13. With a new moon in 2018, the night sky will be superb conditions to catch shooting stars.
For the more adventurous ones out there, here is another way to catch nighttime views in Stephen C. Foster State Park.
