There are quite a few bodies of water in Georgia. The exact number depends on your definition of various bodies of water sizes, but by some estimates we have over 800 lakes in Georgia! There's so much to love about being out on the water. Whether you're relaxing by the shore or floating calmly in a kayak or canoe, it just feels incredibly peaceful to be out in nature near a lake or pond. One particularly tranquil lake in Georgia is Hamburg Lake in Mitchell, GA. This Middle Georgia lake is the centerpiece of the state park that shares its name, but it's in somewhat of a remote area and isn't nearly as popular as some of parks that are a little closer to major towns. Check it out:
If you've never been to Hamburg State Park, you're really missing out.
This beautiful park is about an hour away from Augusta and 45 minutes from Milledgeville, in the tiny town of Mitchell.
The lake is fed by the Little Ogeechee River and is incredibly serene.
Largemouth bass, crappie, and bream are all common here, making this a great spot to cast a line if you're a fan of fishing.
Of course, you can also enjoy just relaxing in (or on) the water.
The park is home to a 1921 gristmill that has been fully restored, and even has a museum filled with farming equipment that's open at select times.
Whether you stay at the lakeside campground or just want to relax for an afternoon, it doesn't get much more peaceful than a visit to Hamburg Lake in Mitchell, GA.
The park is also home to the charming Hamburg State Park Nature Trail, an easy 3.4-mile trek that's perfect for clearing your mind.
