The gold rush in Georgia was a huge piece of history that we are proud to have written in the books. There are still glimpses of this history when Georgians visit small towns like Dahlonega and other abandoned mines in Georgia. However, there is one hike in Georgia that will take you through a beautiful mountain preserve, which was once the site of abundant gold mining prospects back in the 1800s. Take a look at why the Indian Seats Trail in Sawnee Mountain Preserve is worth checking out this season.
The Indian Seats Loop Trail at Sawnee Mountain Preserve is about 4 miles roundtrip through some of the most stunning views around.
This moderate hiking trail will take you to a breathtaking overlooking of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
This trail has a fascinating history, too.
On the way up through the trail, you can appreciate all the flora and fauna that welcome autumn with open arms.
But make sure you keep an eye out for the barred tunnels that were once old gold mines in the 1800s, abandoned now and dangerous to trek through.
It’s interesting to wander to these abandoned gold mines and imagine the types of gold being pulled, or how far down the tunnels actually go.
While you cannot adventure into the mines for safety reasons, it is still terrifyingly fun to peer into the darkness of Georgia's history.
Another interesting piece of history comes when hikers get to the famed overlook.
The reason Indian Seats Trail got its name is because of the depressions in the rock.
Legend has it that the local tribes who inhabited the land centuries ago used these depressions as seats to keep a lookout, meditate, or just sit and observe.
Sit in the depressions yourself and see what it was like many years ago to live on the land.
The history that the Indian Seats Loop Trail holds is nothing short of pure magic.
