The truth is, there is not a state park in Georgia that isn’t worth the visit. Georgia is home to 50 state parks, each with differing characteristics, highlights, and history. But sometimes, especially when people are itching to get out into the great outdoors, we like to highlight the underdogs. Hard Labor Creek State Park in Georgia is certainly an underdog in comparison to other state parks, simply because it isn’t as well-known. But, that doesn’t mean it isn’t fascinating in its own right.
Hard Labor Creek State Park in Georgia clocks in at 5,804-acres and is located between Rutledge and Boswick.
The name of the park is from the small stream that cuts through the land which is named Hard Labor Creek.
Much of the land and surrounding area was built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the 1930s.
Home to two different group camps, Camp Rutledge and Camp Daniel Morgan, the latter has been the filming location for various movies throughout the 70s and 80s.
The park itself is filled with nature, from bird and butterfly watching to star gazing on a clear night.
Hard Labor Creek State Park hosts quite a few different events throughout the year from star gazing by kayak during the summer, on set cinema screenings in the fall, and even spooky wagon rides at Halloween.
The Pioneer Festival is another reason for guests to visit the park and learn about pioneer history within the state firsthand.
You can camp by the lake, hike through the wildflowers, and enjoy the peace and quiet that this underrated state park has to offer.
