Stargazing in Georgia is a wonderful hobby. We have several dark sky parks and remote areas that are just perfect for gazing up at the sky. Astronomy is a particularly interesting activity when there are celestial events such as meteor showers or eclipses going on. Each winter, one of the biggest and brightest meteor showers of all occurs in the northern hemisphere. The Geminid meteor shower happens annually in early December, and it's a real treat for those of us who love celestial events in Georgia. Nature puts on a spectacular show and it's an out-of-this-world experience to observe in person.
Whether you're an experienced astronomer armed with a multitude of telescopes or just someone who likes admiring the stars, the Geminid meteor shower will be a beautiful display of natural wonder.
The shower will be visible to the naked eye for anyone in the northern hemisphere, as long as the weather is clear and you're away from city lights.
The 2022 event will begin the night of December 14, around 2:00-3:00 a.m. local time.
Thousands of meteors moving at 22 miles per second will soar through the sky as they fall off their parent asteroid, 3200 Phaethon.
3200 Phaethon is a massive "rock comet" that travels closer to the sun on its orbit than any named asteroid.
This annual meteor shower is typically one of the biggest and brightest celestial events of the year.
So what are you waiting for? Set your alarm and get your coats ready to bundle up and catch one of the best meteor showers in Georgia in 2022!
You'll want to travel to a remote area of the state if you're planning on catching the meteor shower live, as city lights can make it more difficult to see stars.
Have you ever witnessed a meteor shower in Georgia, whether it was the December Geminid shower or another? Share your experiences in the comments, and let us know if you're planning on getting up to watch this beautiful scene play out live.
