We have some magnificent parks and preserves in Georgia. There are no shortage of places for sightseeing, camping, hiking, and just enjoying the natural beauty that surrounds us in the Peach State. With all the incredible scenery in our northern mountains and southern coastline, it can be easy to miss a lot of the destinations in the middle portion of the state. One of our favorite attractions in central Georgia is the stunning Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge. This amazing preserve is just perfect for some time away from stresses and the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The central part of the state is criminally underrated. There's a surprising amount of attractions here. We've got cities like Macon and Milledgeville, but also cool historical sites like the Ocmulgee Mounds. And don't forget about our amazing natural areas, one of which is the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge!
This 35,000-acre park is filled with hardwood and pine forests, plus tons of streams and ponds.
The area was designated as a national wildlife refuge in 1939. Prior to that, the land had been extremely eroded and destroyed from improper farming techniques.
Needless to say, there's a lot of wildlife here. Over 200 species of birds and 50 species of mammals reside here.
There are miles of trails to explore here, most of which are not overly difficult.
They're great for mountain biking or hiking, and there are plenty of short trails if you're looking for a kid-friendly hike.
There's nothing like getting out and exploring untamed wilderness to make you appreciate the beauty of the Peach State.
